Grouse Mountain

Grouse Mountain, peak of Vancouver, exceeds 1,200m in altitude. It is the site of an alpine ski area during winter season and a popular hiking site during the summer. It also provides entertainment and other outdoor activities which include skytide, ziplines, paragliding, and many more. The peak of the mountain showcases the breathtaking panoramic views of the city, sea and surrounding mountains in all year long. One of Grouse mountain most inspiring creation is “The eye of the wind”. This is the world’s first and only wind turbine that has a viewPOD at the top of the tower; which allow tourist to stand in a 360- degree clear glass area and enjoy the view of beautiful Vancouver city. This facility was anticipated to eventually supplying 25% of the resort’s electricity using wind power. This design was recognized in the 2011 consulting Engineers of British Columbia,  “Awards for Engineering Excellence”.

Blue Grouse

Grouse Mountain was named by the first recorded hikers to reach the summit in October 1894. Back in those days, there was no bridge across Burrard inlet and no road to the base, climbing Grouse Mountain was a 3 – 4 days journey. During the long journey of hiking up the mountain, the hikers hunted a Blue Grouse, to honor it; they named the peak “Grouse Mountain”.

Double Chairlift
During the early milestones of Grouse Mountain, to make the mountain more accessible, railroad was attempted to be build, however, due to steel shortage during World War I, it didn’t happen. Another railway attempt occurred during World War II, but also due to steel shortage, the attempt was again unsuccessful. In 1949, “The World’s first double chairlift” was build to replace the 2-3 hours long journey. Due to this double chairlift, the peak of the mountain became a hub for the international jet set. Since then, many more renovations and enhancements were done to improve Grouse Mountain, maintaining Grouse Mountain’s reputation as a leader.
